FEET-WASHING IS FIRST

Scripture Reading: Genesis 18                                                                                                  March 31st, 2012

Memory Verse: Genesis 19:2-3 - 19:2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

19:3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

Introduction: There are types throughout the scriptures. The Old Testament lamb was a type of Jesus Christ. That is, a foreshadow. Types can answer questions that we have about other scriptures. When we see these types we know that the scriptures are verifying scriptures. Jonah was a type of the Messiah. This is one reason why we know that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, because he fulfilled the type. At the Passover, how do we know that we should was our feet before we take of the unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine?

  1. 1.Who came to Abraham on their way to Sodom? How many men appeared to him? Genesis 18:1-2.

Genesis 18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

Genesis 18:2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

  1. 2.With what title did Abraham address one these men? So who was this Man? With what word did Abraham humble himself? v3.

Genesis 18:3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

  1. 3.What does Abraham offer them to do first? v4

Genesis 18:4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

  1. 4.After the men washed their feet, what did Abraham do? v5-6.

Genesis 18:5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

Genesis 18:6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

  1. 5.If Sarah made this bread quickly, was the bread leavened? v6.

Genesis 18:6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

  1. 6.How many angels came to Lot at evening? Genesis 19:1.

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

  1. 7.With what title did Lot address these two angels? v2.

Genesis 19:2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

  1. 8.Who was that missing third Man? v1.

Genesis 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

Answer: In Genesis 18:3 you will notice that LORD is spelled in capital letters. In Genesis 19:1 you will noticed that the lords is spelled in lowercase letters. Jesus Christ met Abraham and told him his plans for Sodom, but He did not continue on to Sodom. He only sent His angels to do the work.

  1. 9.What did Lot offer to do first? v2.

Genesis 19:2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

  1. 10.What did they eat afterwards? What type of bread? v3.

Genesis 19:3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

  1. 11.What mission did Abraham send his servant on? Genesis 24:2-4.

Genesis 24:2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:

Genesis 24:3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

Genesis 24:4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

  1. 12.Whom did his servant find? v10-15.

Genesis 24:10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.

Genesis 24:11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.

Genesis 24:12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.

Genesis 24:13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

Genesis 24:14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.

Genesis 24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

  1. 13.How did Rebekah’s family accept Abraham’s servant? v29-31.

Genesis 24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.

Genesis 24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.

Genesis 24:31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.

  1. 14.When these men came into Bethuel’s house, what was one of the first things they did? v32.

Genesis 24:32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.

  1. 15.What did they do after they washed their feet? v33,54.

Genesis 24:33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.

Genesis 24:54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

Conclusion: In these three types, feet-washing is first. Easting is afterwards. There is enough evidence in the New Testament to determine that we should wash our feet before the unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine. However, there types verify the order of these ordinances.

Conclusion: Idols are made by men and have no power of their own. They cannot speak, teach, or walk.

Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Conclusion: There are more scriptures that let us know that we should not worship anyone other than the Creator.

Conclusion: What should they be reading? They should be reading the same information written in Peter and written to John.

REDEMPTION THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS

Scripture Reading: Romans 3                                                                                                     March 3rd, 2012

Memory Verse: Romans 3:28 - Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Introduction: There is no penance sufficient for our justification. There is no animal sacrifice, ritual, or ordinance that can be used to purchase justification. There is only one justification for sins.

Definition: To propitiate means to appease, or to satisfy, or to relieve.

Propitiation simply means to appease.

  1. 1.How many are righteous? Would this include Job, Moses, Enoch, Elijah, and others? Romans 3:10, (Psalms 14:1-3).

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Psalmss 14:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalms of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Psalmss 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

Psalmss 14:3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

  1. 2.How sinful are we mortal humans? Romans? Romans 3:11-12

Romans 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

Romans 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

  1. 3.If we do our best to keep the law, what hope is there for us? Romans 3:20a, (Hebrews 10:1-4).

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Hebrews 10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

Hebrews 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

Hebrews 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

  1. 4.Where can we find righteousness? Romans 3:22.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

  1. 5.What does this redemption cost us? What must we accomplish to acquire this redemption? v24.

Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

  1. 6.What is the spiritual substance that contains the redemption? v25.

Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

  1. 7.If this redemption cannot be bought, how is it acquired? v26.

Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Answer: Through faith. We are justified by our belief in Jesus. The belief that His blood was shed for our sins and that He died in our place.

  1. 8.So what is the relationship between faith and the law? v28, 31.

Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Conclusion: The Bible is very clear on this topic. There should be no confusion. However, many today still perform acts of penance, rituals, ordinances, and even animal sacrifices. None of these is a propitiation for our sins. Again, redemption and justification is only through the blood of Jesus Christ the Savior
